The Ashmolean Dining Room

I love showing off my City. It is dramatic, beautiful and seeped in a long, rich and colourful history. The other weekend I played tour guide to my dear friend, Kathryn.  Its fair to say we are both self confessed foodies and ‘culture vultures’. Kathryn also has a penchant for rooftop bars, cafes and restaurants. Therefore a visit to the Ashmolean Rooftop Dining Room,  as the sun was setting, was the perfect end to a long day of sightseeing.

Coffee and Cake

Coffee, cake and afternoon tea is served from 3pm. Customers can choose from a selection of cakes, puddings and the classic afternoon tea. For that special occasion you can have a glass of champagne or wine with your cake. After much deliberation Kathryn and I opted for a slice of cake and a cappuccino each; the cake display definitely aided our decision. The coffee was lovely and the cake was commendable, Kathryn even Tweeted me the other day saying she was dreaming of the carrot cake at the Ashmolean. The chocolate cake was nice but it didn’t taste, or look, as homemade as the carrot. This was a bit disappointing considering the menu stated ‘a selection of home baked cakes’. However despite this small point it was still lovely and chocolately enough for a self confessed chocoholic.

The Atmosphere

The setting and atmosphere is what makes the Ashmolean Dining Room go from good to great. It mixes the old and the new and the finishing touches make all the difference from the artistic menus to the flowers on the tables. Add to this attentive service and friendly staff you have a winning formula. I know that many young people in Oxford have yet to visit the Ashmolean because they immediately think that a visit there will break the bank. Well have I got news for you… An afternoon trip will not burn a hole in your wallet, coffee and cake will set you back around £6 per person; Afternoon Tea is £12.50 but you can upgrade to a champagne tea for £18.50.

Final Thoughts

I would urge you all to visit the Ashmolean Dining Room, it’s in a fantastic location with nice cake, great coffee, fantastic service and an enviable view. I will be returning in the hopefully not too distant future to try dinner and/or lunch. It’s the perfect place to take visitors and locals alike: my friend, the Londoner, loved it as did this Oxfordshire Country Bumpkin.
